Some time ago, during some down time at work, I told my buddy Gabe (follow him on Twitter at @gabestein) about all the different types of stats used in sports, particularly baseball.
I wondered: could there be a way to have stats for daily life?
There are a number of metrics in baseball that can tell you how effective a certain player is in certain situations. Some managers make many of their decisions based off of these statistics—sometimes even adjusting their lineups very drastically.
All of these baseball stats fall under something called sabermetrics, something you can find out more about by watching the movie “Moneyball” (with Aaron Sorkin partially involved in screenplay, I have to wonder if that movie will be like “The Social Network,” except involving baseball).
With that in mind, enter saBROmetrics.
More will be discussed in the future. Essentially (and ideally), saBROmetrics will be able to tell you:
- whether that semi-attractive girl at the bar is worth a shot
- if your chances of scoring a chick vary depending on what bar you go to
- how to pick the right wingman based on his past record of accomplishment/failure
Gabe and I did come up with one saBROmetric stat: WHIP
Roughly speaking (for men), WHIP involves these:
- W = the number of times your girlfriend/significant other denies you the chance to go out with your own friends
- H = the total number of times you have made plans with friends (counting successful plans and plans foiled by girlfriend/significant other)
- IP = the number of days in a week, obviously 7
So the formula is:
(W/H) * IP
Obviously, a higher WHIP means your girl is keeping you on a short and tight leash. These formulas/formulae are subject to debate so if you have any suggestions or feedback, post them.
